Hi all,
My computer started freezing up every once and awhile to the point that the only way to get out was to unplu it. Now when I plug it back in and turn it on the screen just stays black. My friend suggested I get a new hardrive what do you guys think?

Thanks
Wallace

Does the display leave power saving mode (some sort of green indicator light, and maybe some tube noises?). Is the screen completely blank, or is there a blinking cursor, or any sort of diagnostic message? If the machine isn't displaying anything, listen for POST code beeps right when you turn it on. If you can tell us the sequence, we may be able to divine the problem. If you're not getting a display or POST codes, you probably have a more serious problem. I'd first try just reseating all of the memory and expansion cards, and the power and drive cables. Sometimes things just get loose.

The display is blank except for the small blue screen that comes on the monitor for monitor settings. This screen usually would only come up when the computer was off but the monitor was on. The computer itself makes no beeps when turned on. Only the humming of the fan in back and the green light on the on switch.

Sounds like your not getting a video signal feed. Check your cables, and video card, re seat them . If this does not work, then you might have a bad video card, or worst case scenario, a bad mother board.

I tried checking all the cables and resetting the cards and still no beeps and just a blank screen. The last thing that I tried to do before the computer froze for good was delete the temporary internat files. I thought maybe they were causing the computer to freeze so often. I don't know if I should just get a new hard drive or motherboard or a whole new computer. I really can't afford a new computer now. But, I don't want to buy the wrong thing is there any way that I can tell what I need?

Now that I think of it, this sounds like an old machine I once had. If it shut down, it would need to sit for a day or two before it would come back up (similar symptoms; no POST, no display, just fans). The problem was eventually resolved when we put a new motherboard in it. However, there's no way I can know for sure that you have the same situation. If you have access to interchangable parts for the machine (same socket motherboard, similar processor, similar videocard), you might try swapping things out to see if it will come back up.

WELL, I put a new motherboard and new cpu in my computer and now I get some action on the monitor. But when I try to load windows a blue screen comes up and says it was stop due to a error. The screen says to check the hard drive for virus. I used my start up disk to erase the hard drive and reload windows. It seemed to load the disk fine but when I turned the computer back on everything was fine until it tried to load windows again and I got the same blue screen. Do you think I need a new hard drive or should I just get the HD reformatted?

If your running windows XP and you changed the MB, you probably have a different chipset then the previous board, and you will need to do a repair install

Do I just need to load the drives from the disk that came with the MB or is a repair install something else?
