I got up this morning and my computer would not turn on. there was no power at all. I checked all the connections. I just replaced the cpu, motherboard, and added ram a month ago because it was frozen beyond repair. The metal box with a fan that the plug goes into will not even come on, at least when the computer was frozen that part always came on. Could a bad motherboard cause this or would it be more likely the metal box is shorted out. please help.

Thank You,

By metal box, I assume you mean power supply. to test the power supply, disconnect it from the motherboard and look at the pins, one of the wires will be green,( Jumper Pin 14)
take a piece of speaker wire or something similar and touch it to the green wire, take the other end of the speaker wire and attach it to any of the BLACK wires on the power connector, this will create a bypass to run the power supply directly, once this is done, check to see if the fan on the power supply is turning, if not, then the power supply is bad.

If your unsure if your doing it right, look at the following diagram, short pin 14 to one of the negatives (3,5,7,13,15,16,17 )
