You could try this. Go to C:\Users\xxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft
\Windows\Recent where xxxxxx is your user ID profile and delete the
shortcuts from there. Now, Windows will begin rebuilding your recent
items list. It worked for me with no subsequent problems.
I previously asked a question as to why this happened and why this fix
worked, but didn't get any answers. It certainly doesn't cause any
harm for you to try it.
Let me know if this works for you. Your answer may help puzzle out the
rest of it. In my case, I removed 95 shortcuts from the recent folder
and voila the sink was unclogged and it began working as expected. It
still puzzles me.
