Cleaninf msconfig | startup

I'd like a referral to a site which lists and describes some of the myriad
of items which end up in msconfig | start.

I Googled "msconfig startup files", but as usual, only get a series of
offers to buy registry tampering file from who knows whom.

You would do better to leave msconfig alone. Using Auto runs is a better
way to proceed.

Use Autoruns to find any unwanted start ups!
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected.

Hope this helps.

The myriad of entries are, in nearly all cases, apps that you have installed
and failed where it is posible to select / deselect the option to start with
win.

I haven't used this yet, but you might want to look at it: Snap Files at

Get this and get on Google to find out what's starting up.

You can get more information about these at
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it there,
try google searches (on the names of the startup files, not "msconfig
startup files") and ask about specifics here.

Forget msconfig, which should just be used for trouble shooting. Open each
of the programs in the Notification Area/System Tray and turn off the option
to run at startup, except for the ones your really use or your anti-virus
and anti-spyware.

Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot
(Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs that load (grouped by labeled
tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use with
care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any changes you
have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need to
highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online' option to get
the details, especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.
