chkdsk once a month!!

I have read that for maintenance you should run a chkdsk once a month. Here's mine and a Zip file at the bottom showing you how to find the chkdsk log. All comments are always welcome for discussion. This is what I've read about chkdsk.

It makes sense to run chdsk /r from time to time to scan for bad sectors which occur also on modern hardware. This takes a lot of time as the entire disk is read.

When CHKDSK finds bad sectors it will log the affected files to the system log so you know which files are damaged. Once bad sectors are found on a disk it is likely to fail soon and copying all valuable data off it ASAP is a good idea.

Although that may have been true in the past, I don't really know, I don't think it applies to the current Windows operating systems. I could be wrong.

Since chkdsk fixes file system issues, it shouldn't be nececessary to run it regularly unless you're encountering situations like your computer shutting down improperly or programs crashing while accessing files. Windows will detect if your file system has issues and will run chkdsk on boot if needed.

Hi @allheart55 (Cindy E) You are probably right. It's a old habit from running XP. When I had XP chkdsk would find problems and fix them.
I still like seeing the message that no bad sectors were found after running chkdsk. Just makes me fell better.

Yuppers, but I never lost a HD. I might post a thread on sfc /scannow latter. I run that just to make sure all my files haven't been corrupted and are still in tact! My computer vocabulary leaves a lot to be be desired sometimes.
sfc /scannow checks the authenticity of the system files and replace the files that have been "fiddled" with.

Windows have some great repair tools like sfc / scannow that you mentioned, Cindy.
A lot of third party programs are not necessary as Windows have great tools in built.

Here's my sfc /scannow !My old rig is looking good! It ain't broke @DSTM , but I just like checking her out once in awhile and if we don't have any thing for our quest to read once in awhile, who will join our forum. Now if were talking about up dating drivers, I agree 100%; don't fix it if it ain't broke. I do have a great 3rd party program for checking for up dated drivers however. After you PC gets so old the manufacture stops posting up dated drivers for your rig. I like to keep my grafics drivers up dated.

Hi! @Rich-M is this not a quote from you on a different forum??"I am not quite sure why there is so much misunderstanding out there. Defragmentation is not needed on ssd drives and can even be troublesome because they store files differently but checkdisk works perfectly well on these drives though doing checkdisk on any drive once a month is not desirable. Run that when there is a problem or once a year if you really want to."

Yes sir I see my cancer doctor every 6 weeks. My blood is checked and if my Hemoglobin is to high, they drain a bag of blood.
I'm sure not looking for problems and I'm hoping there aren't any; but if there are some, I sure want to catch them before they develop into some thing serious. I had a friend where Macrium would not create a image because there were bad sectors on his HD. After they were repaired, Macrium completed the image. I create a image of my OS once a month and I usually run a chkdsk before creating the image. It's just some thing I do out of habit.Do I need to. I don't know, probably not!
