Chipset XP Drivers For Computer Built For Vista

RAH

I bought a debranded HP computer with no software installed. Just a
blank hard drive. The computer was originally built to be sold with
Vista. I installed XP Home and updated to SP2 and the latest critical
updates. I have been able to get most things working OK with XP
supplied drivers, except for the motherboard. It has integrated audio
and video, and I can't install my monitor driver without getting the
XP version of the motherboard chipset.

I went to the HP site and all the drivers are available there. Except
that they were all written for Vista. I tried to install a couple and
get an error message that I have the wrong OS. I went to the ATI site
and looked up the chipset, and they said I need to contact HP. Going
in circles. Where can I find an XP chipset driver?

CPU: Intel Pentium4 HT (3.0GHz/800MHz) 2MB L2 Cache

If HP doesn't offer them, then you won't. Period.

That last post is a joke...HP when it does offer any software,its probably
outdated...HP usually goes with intel hardware,if thats on youre MB,go
to intel.com,downloads,chipset software,locate the chipset installation
utility
for youre MB,the latest ones arent always the best,you can/should find what
MB intel has with the same chip,go to its page or at downloads,select
desktop,
enter intels MB #...Once the chipset utility is downloaded,get the video
display
download,install 2nd.

The chipset is made by ATI.

I would say in general terms, that for these boxes that ship
with Vista, you can find a lot of WinXP drivers, by going to
the chip manufacturer's web site. Or even scrounging around
the Dell web site, for some of their downloads. In most
cases, you can find a way to fix it, but it takes a bit
of work and search time.

The Express 1100, might consist of RC415 Northbridge and
SB600 Southbridge. The Dell Optiplex 320 appears to use
the Express 1100 chipset. I went to the Dell site, and
looked for drivers for the Optiplex 320.

This 53.4MB download, is an Express 1100 video driver for
WinXP.

There is a 4MB download, for an SMBUS driver. I'm not sure
why that is so big, or what that might help with.

So the pickings are pretty thin. I presume the default
Microsoft driver would work for storage on SB600, as long as
the BIOS is set properly.

Audio will be more of a problem. I'd give the Realtek
driver a start, because the HP description of the ECS RC415ST-HM
(Alhena5-GL6) motherboard, says it has an ALC888 CODEC.
And the README file here (80KB) lists the ALC888. Usually,
in the Realtek installer, there are the rudiments of KB888111
UAA driver, and if that is not enough, you'd have to go to the
Microsoft site and get it, or the later UAA version.

It helps a bit, to have enumeration info for the missing bits,
so at least you can see whether there is support inside a
driver or not. And taming the Express 1100 will require
every bit of intelligence you can get.

The ATI drivers for that chipset should be these ones:

Note that these ATI "integrated" video drivers are a different download than
regular ATI video drivers which don't have the mobo chipset support. Ideally
the motherboard chipset drivers should be installed first so that other
hardware is correctly identified by the OS.

You could also use software like Everest, FreshDiagnose etc. to identify the
chipset and other hardware components installed in the machine. Download
the XP drivers for each from the respective manufacturer's websites..

Thanks Paul and Bryan. Between the two of you I was able to get rid
of all the caution icons in device manager. Looks like the video,
audio, USB, monitor, etc. are all running as they should under XP. I
really appreciate the help.
