Just purchased nortons 360 and went to back up and cannot get my e-drive to
work. Went to my computer and when i right clicked on it a blank page came
up, tried doing the same with my d-drive and that worked. How can i check to
see why its not being deteced or maybe a driver not installed? Last year I
had some problems with my pc and Dell did a reformatt on it for me on-line.
Could have something not been installed? I did all the drivers myself--wow?
When I install a cd into the drive the light flashes and the little green
disk shows up next to the cursor momentarily and goes off. Now talking to my
daughter she says she hasn't been able to burn any music for some time
either. I can right click on the icon (my computer)and get to my properties.
LOST, any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Tim

HOW TO: Troubleshoot Issues That Occur When You Write Data to a CD-R or
CD-RW Optical Disc in Windows XP

CD-R Drive or CD-RW Drive Is Not Recognized As a Recordable Device

In my opinion you are better off without Norton home security products.
There are better products for this, that are less resource intensive, less
problematic, and in some cases even free.

If you want suggestions post back.

If you tell Dell they might send you a free reinstallation disc of Roxio,
it's a cd burner and ripper etc. Just tell it didn't get installed and or it
got deleted by accident and they'll mail you a new one. I think that is a
normal procedure they do and they know it. Hopefully.

Thanks, George

I meant to also suggest you try running the utility referenced in that first
link to restore a missing CD drive.

Rock, good point on Nortons, I have always used in the past but this year I
learned, don't believe I'll be getting it next year. Just spent almost 2
hours with Dell online, they reinstalled all drivers for my drivers and got
nowhere, they told me to try some different cd's, which my wife is off to the
store now. If that doesn't work told me to take it to the shop. George
(another person to reply) said to talk to dell about Roxio, this was never
reinstalled after dell did there thing last year, so I just tried my cd and
it said it was not compatiable with my windows, outdated I suppose. Went to
Roxio site and it said a cost would be involved, I'm not going to upgrade
unless I would know it would fix, don't know that much about all this
computer stuff. If you have any other good info i'd willing willing to try.
Thanks, Tim

Rock, If the first link you were talking about was the Roxio I tried
upgrading to the latest version, 5.3.5.10 , says now to check power cables to
the device, or check for updates. I understand my pc(Dell) is a few years
old now but I hardly ever used the darn thing, think it should have lasted
way longer than this( I believe when Dell did the reformat that Roxio was
never installed and now I'm at this point). I'm just frustrated with the
whole thing going back to this new Nortons 360 that I had problems with last
week that took them hours to help me get resolved. Just had it in the shop
last week to get some spyware manuallly deleted and to install more Ram
because this Nortons was dragging it down and now still having problems with
NORTONS! Just hate to have to take it back in for this problem now. Well
thanks for the help, most of the stuff suggested here is kind of out of my
leaque. Thanks, Tim

This was the link:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm

Scroll to the section 8. PROBLEMS, where it reads:

“My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device Manager, etc.)â€
This happens quite often if one of the third-party packages has been
uninstalled. They add references in the Registry for modules which they use,
and these references fail to be removed, leaving Windows unable to find the
files apparently needed for CD devices at the next boot. There is a simple
Registry patch to correct this (download it here). Before using the patch,
be sure to back up the Registry. After using the patch and rebooting, the
drives should reappear. Any third party package that is still required will
then need to be re-installed.

Click on the "here" in (download it here).

Good luck.

Best to get rid of Norton. For AV there is Avast (free - which is what I
use), and AVG (free) and NOD32 and Kaspersky are both paid but excellent.

For firewall (all free) there is Sunbelt Software Kerio Personal Firewall,
Comodo Personal Firewall, Zone Alarm (Zone alarm was bought out. I don't
like the new releases, they are quite bloated.)

For non viral malware you should regularly use several programs. There are
a variety of good ones, all free: Ad-Aware SE Personal, SpyBot S&D,
Windows Defender, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG Antispyware, BHO Demon, Spyware
Blaster (doesn't do active scanning but prevents malware from installing),
and HijackThis, to name some.

Rock, if you see this Dell just contacted me again and did some more
troubleshooting and found my problem to be a bad drive. So looks like I'll
have to replace it. Just wanted to let you know and to thank you again for
the help!!! Thanks, Tim
