I have a cd drive on my computer which is not being recognized by ME.
I put the ME disk in the cd drive but it doesn't open because the
drive is not listed.
How do I get ME to open the drive so that I can update drivers on the
computer?
Could I be able to put the XP disk in and install it from that drive
on that computer?
Thanks

The first question is, does the drive actually work? Drives fail, grow
tired and die.

What drivers do you wish to update? I doubt you're going to find updated
CD drivers nor do I think that drivers are likely to be your problem.

That rather depends on what you are wanting to do. Software rarely
repairs hardware faults.

Turning to your problem. I feel/suspect the problem is more one of a
dying optical drive than one of a problem with the operating system. You
might want to try the following.
a) Using A Win Me boot floppy, boot to DOS selecting option 2 - with CD
support (it might be 3, the important thing is to select the option WITH
CD support). This should then lead to your seeing an A:\> prompt.
b) Insert a CD containing data in your CD drive. A data CD is preferred
to an audio CD or a VCD/SVCD.
c) On the assumption that you have just the one hard drive partition (C:\)
enter the following at the A:\> prompt and then click Return
DIR E:\
d) This should now give you a listing of the contents of the data CD or
rather the top level files and folders. If not and you get an error
message then this would strongly suggest a defective optical drive.

If you don't have a Win Me boot floppy you can either create one for
yourself (Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Startup Disk) or download
the image of a Win Me startup disk from www.bootdisk.com that you can then
run which transfers a copy to a floppy. If when creating a startup disk
you get asked for a file see below for what to do.
