Can't update java or Adobe Reader

When I attempt to update Java I get a message that says it can't download the Java installation software. For Adobe Reader it says it failed to initialize. I can't really tell what's going on there. Please help. I've already disabled all firewalls, security software and checked for any malware. My router doesn't appear to have any firewalls in it that would cause this. What else could be going on? I'm able to get to the internet, just can't do these updates.
