Can't play videos

For some reason I can no longer play web videos from news sites like MSNBC,
NYT, Washington Post etc. Also can't play any Youtube videos. Until
recently, I had this capability but now it's gone. It happened about the
time I downloaded SP3 but I'm not sure it is related to that event.

The culprit seems to be a lack of Adobe Flash Player. It seems to be
missing from my computer. When I attempt to download the latest version
from the Adobe site, it will not do it. There are many suggestions from
Adobe as to why it won't download but none seems to help. I would really
like to get this capability back. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

2.2MHZ Intel dual processor
2 gig memory
XP SP3
AdAware
Zone alarm
SpyBot S&D
Spyware blaster
Hosts file
Avast! AV

Open internet options,settings,view objects,locate the adobe/flash active X,
R.click,select "update"...

Andrew,

When I go to "view objects", there is no Adobe Flash Active X entry listed.

In my control panel, "add remove programs", Adobe Flash Player Active X is
listed but shows no size entry so it apparently is not resident on my
computer. I have uninstalled the entry and it disappears but still does not
allow me to install flash player.

When I go to C/Windows/system32/macromedia/flash I see 4 entries, none of
which is the flash .exe. There is a flash entry named "uninstall activeX
but it has a red X through it and disappears when clicked on.

When I go to C/Windows/program files/adobe, AdobeReader 8.0 is there but no
flash player.

Looks like something is preventing me from downloading Flash player. I've
tried disabling most everything on the startup menu but it still won't let
me load Flash player.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Unfortunately, you neglected to tell us which suggestions you have
already tried!

Is there anything on this page you haven't tried yet?:

"Troubleshoot Adobe Flash Player installation for Windows"
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_19166&sliceId=2

Usually, all that is necessary is uninstalling and reinstalling. Also,
it's important to configure your browser correctly (especially,
Javascript and ActiveX settings).

Finally, programs like SpywareBlaster have settings to disable Flash
content, so check to see whether you have something like Flash Killer
enabled.

Looks like I was way off track! After disabling everything I could think
of, I was very frustrated. I finally used the XP"restore" capability and
found that the problem was gone when I went back about a month. The culprit
was an ad-blocker function I had downloaded. With it disabled, videos
played just fine.

Do I ever feel dumb.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
