Can't load user profile

My XP installation can't load the user profile and loads a default with
access denied to most facilities in XP and my programs.

This follows a destroyed registry and restoration by using a separate XP
installation on a different partition to copy several different sets of hives
from earlier restoration points. So the machine is now booted from the C:\
partition of a dual boot configuration (separate XP in E:\]\). It will boot
to both but the original C:\ installation is the problem.

Where is the user profile and how do I get the machine to recognize it? I
have access to normally hidden and system files using the 2nd XP installation.

Regarding "...restoration by using a separate XP

hives from earlier restoration points..." - an absolute no-no.

Perform repair reinstall that should take care of your problem.
