Can't get rid of a program

I removed a program from my computer and a week or so later had to do a
system restore. System restore didn't put the whole program back on my
computer and now I can't get rid of it. I tried to install the program
again but the install file on the disk says there is a previous version and
then it can't be found. Add/remove programs can't find anything to remove
but it continues to tell me the program is still on the computer. The
program is not listed in the start menu and can't be found using the search
function. It exists by name in the Add/Remove list - I can't re-install
because it doesn't exist.

Oh, please - how can I fix this strange occurrence. I've tried to restore
to another date but nothing changes with that particular program. It's a
dumb program anyway which is why I wanted to delete it in the first place.

And the program would be...?

System Restore will not reinstall an application you'd uninstalled, PL.

I tried to remove Office 2007 Beta. Add/Remove says it is there ocupying
680MB. Remove option says it cannot find it. Says version number
12.0.4017.1006. I cannot install my new Office 2007 from CD since it says
already installed. Catch 22. Help!

Please begin a new thread in an appropriate newsgroup for /your/ problem.
Thank you.

What newsgroup?

No CD. Software downloaded from MS site.

If you don't have a CD, why did you post, "I cannot install my new Office
2007 from CD"?

Try Office Update, Office Misc or Office Setup newsgroups.

Used System restore because my sis-in-law wanted me to use IM. I loaded it
and Yahoo changed my home page to something else and I couldn't get back to
the home page I wanted. (I think that is called hijacking?) I deleted the
IM but the only way I could get to my original home page was to restore to a
previous date. Hope I explained it properly.

OK - I may have cleaned up this issue. Used the Tools Uninstall feature of
CCleaner. It couldn't uninstall so I simply used the delete feature to
remove it from the list. That worked and I then used the XP Search feature
and couldn't any trace of that program. The Windows Installer Cleanup tool
warning scared me so I looked around CCleaner just on a whim. I hope it
worked because I don't like fragments of things just hanging around or
computer stuff that wants to elude me. Time will tell but if all is well
then I will establish a Restore point.

Good luck. In the future, I'd advise not using System Restore to resolve a
simple problem like a changed home page.

And did you try using that CD and running a Repair? Again, post to one of
the Office-specific newsgroups, please.

Yes I tried to run with the new CD but cannot get past the message that says
cannot update.

I have a CS PhD and almost 50 years computer experience. I know how to do
all the basic corrections. This has to be fixed with the original Beta
installation software, which I never had since it was downloaded/run online
from the MS site. Why can't you just help me fix the problem here, rather
than send me to some other thread? Is there something I can delete that is
misleading the remove and install software?

The 2007 programs do not appear on the Start menu. They used to, but I ran
the remove, which apparently caused the current problem. It only became
evident when I tried to install the "real" 2007 system from an install CD.
Somehow the remove of the Beta was corrupted.

This is a WinXP-specific newsgroup. Your problem is with getting Office
2007 beta removed and Office 2007 final installed. As such, you'll need to
seek help in an Office-specific newsgroup (e.g.,
microsoft.public.office.misc, microsoft.public.office.setup,
microsoft.public.officeupdate).

To speed you along, I am crossposting this reply to all three (3) of the
above Office-specific newsgroups. Good luck.

Perhaps a little less obtuse would be...

You receive the "This patch package could not be opened" error message in an
Office program:

You have a digital locker if you have ever d/l'd anything from Microsoft's
website(s). You can go there and re-d/l whatever software you purchased or
d/l'd from MS. After you SAVE a copy of the software, you can create an image
file of the install package and burn it, effectively giving you a CD to use
for a repair or whatever else you may need to do.
