Windows 2003 Can't boot into clean Win2003+SP2 install!

Hi all,

I've just freshly installed Windows Server 2003 x64 with SP2 slipstreamed.
After installing and the box reboots, it doesn't boot into the graphical
part of Windows. After the progress bar that goes from left to right a
couple of times it hangs and the monitor goes into standby.

In safe mode, it boots normally. I've tried enabling boot logging, but the
logfile doesn't say what really goes wrong. I've installed southbridge
drivers, ACPI drivers and CPU drivers, to no success. Enabling VGA mode also
does provide a solution.

So videodrivers aren't the problem, or else VGA mode should work. Driver for
my RAID card work fine, otherwise safe mode wouldn't work. Chipset drivers
work fine, otherwise I'd get all kinds of BSoD, I suppose.

So what IS the problem then? If I install the very same windows but with
SP1, the thing work like a charm! So is SP2 fundamentally broken, or did I
do something incredibly stupid?

Remember: it's a default installation, and it NEVER booted normally.

Specs for completeness:
- Asus A8R-MVP (Xpress1600 + ULi M1575)
- Athlon64 X2 3800+
- 2,5GB RAM
- Highpoint RocketRAID 2320
- Boot array of 3 disks
- Data array of 4 disks
- Intel PRO/1000PT network adapter
- Disabled onboard LAN, firewire and audio.
- No overclocking, tweaking or anything like that.

Who will help me out here? Should I install SP1 and forget about SP2 or is
there a real solution? Please help!

Yours,

If SP2 was fundamentally broken then we would have heard
about it several years ago. The problem lies therefore with
your machine. Try the standard approach: Boot it into Safe
Mode, run msconfig.exe and disable every non-MS service
and every task under the Startup tab. Now bring them back
in selectively until you have isolated the culprit.

If your issue persists after trying checking for 3rd party apps, you could
try updating your firmware for your Raid card and/or motherboard (if you
havent already).

This is what your Raid card revision history says...

v1.6 07/02/2007
* Fix RAID0 member disk over 2T overflow issue
* Fix EBDA reallocate issue if other SCSI controller also reallocate
it.

v1.05 06/06/2007
* Fix over 10T RAID creation.
* Fix boot failure from CDROM on MSI E7230 Master-FA4R MB.

v1.04 06/06/2006
* Fix WD3200KS HDD detection.

v1.03 03/30/2006
* Fix system hang on Intel SE7230 when multiple RR232x adapters are
used.

v1.02 01/12/2006
* Fix bus scanning problem when PCI bus number exceeds 0x10.
* Fix RAID5 I/O problem under DOS.
* Fix detection problem with certain WD drives.

v1.01 10/09/2005
* Fix IRQ cable checking
* Add RAID50 support

v1.0 08/20/2005
* First release

Some people have had trouble with Opterons and service pack 2, make sure the
cpu drivers are installed ok.
