Re: Stupidest Vista/Ubuntu thread yet

So, by Vista implementing DEP, UAC, non-Admin accounts, it is actually a
step forward to protect the OS from the applications?! Wow. Who would have
even suggested such a thing!?

Yes, that was sarcasm. Yes, the applications are usually the entry point
in cracking a system. But, once they find an exploit in the app, they
shouldn't have any control over the OS...

Of course, I think that more and more attacks are from mis-informed
consumers, malware, viruses... They can get into a system and make that
system a bot in a SPAM attack, DOS attack, or more.

They may not have had control of the OS. The rules state:

"To claim a laptop as your own, you will need to read the contents of a
designated file on each system through exploitation of a 0day code execution
vulnerability (ie: no directory traversal style bugs)."

It depends on where the file you had to read was located. On all three OS'
users can read system files. The OS may not have been breached but just the
user's account. We won't know until they make the details of the exploits
public.

through applications and services like MySQL, IIS and font servers and the
like. A server view.

The only real difference in this is the Apple and MS-Vista client PCs going
down are that they were attacking using client actions and not loose
services running on their PC. That is, outgoing connections from a client.

In any case, be it a server services attack or an attack on outgoing client
connections you first must execute code on the host. That is Safari and
Real Player issue in this case.

The second hop is to the OS. Ok, you can now execute code on the client,
now what? You need to compromise the OS....you have to pwn2own.

As we say in the security business, hard on the outside, soft'n'chewy on the
inside.

Might be time for all browsers to consider seriously the concept of
chroot-jail for all gadgets, Active-X and plug-ins.

They usually are. The only difference here is attacking client PCs and their
activities and not the servers.

According to the very vague rules I can find all that was necessary was to
read the contents of file. The OS itself may not have been compromised. In
all three OS' a user has read rights for most system files. It may be they
only had to compromise a user account, not take control of the OS. It would
be nice if someone could post a link to the actual rules. All I can find is

Executing code in a user context and reading the file is certainly a
security breach but it doesn't necessarily mean the machine is owned.

Back to my assertion that this is the stupidest troll thread yet. The idiots
doing the arguing don't have any idea what security is and are basically
proselytizing one OS over another and using a contest result that really
didn't prove anything to further their arguments. It's pretty funny.

And yes, I totally agree that that all Internet capable programs should be
in a sandbox with very high sides.

So far, I've determined two ways to run safari on Linux - please advise of
any more:
1) use wine to run the MS version
2) run either MS or MAC-OSX in a virtual box

So far I've found no way to run it natively, but evidently you and frankie
know better.
