Cannot upgrade from XP Pro to Windows 8 using bought disc

I logged on to XP Pro and inserted W 8 Disc and installation started but received an error message and installation stopped and it sent me to a restart. System tries to start W8 but cannot start and continues to error off. It will not try to start using the old XP Pro. If I put the W8 disc in and try to start from it, I get a message that I booted from disc and cannot continue. Any help will be appreciated.
