I recently did a clean install of windows xp pro. I moved my nicer cd/dvd
burner to the box with the fresh install. I can read dvd's and cd r's but
several installation disks (circa 1997-2000) do not show up. I cannot see
files on them. However on this same drive and other optical drives on my
other xp box they are readable.

CD repair for XP:

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot
