Hello, I've been fine and dandy with XP for several years now but decided to
get a second computer built. I finished building it, went out and bought a
new XP disc from the store but can't install onto the new computer.

I get to the prompt to press any key to boot from CD and Id o, it goes to
the screen where it tells you that it is detecting system hardware... and
then it goes to a black screen and locks up.

I know the disc is fine, because I can get to the blue backgrounded screen
to install or repair Windows XP on my other computer. This malfunctioning
computer is able to install and run Fedora Core 7 (Linux OS), but can't
install XP. It's using an ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard, 2 gigs of RAM,
NVidia 7600 GTS, and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 6400+ 3.2 Ghz.

Try unplug pc,remove battery, locate & move the CMOS jumper pin from
1-2 to 2-3 position for .30 seconds or so,then back to 1-2,replace
battery,start
pc.On start up,you'll need to reset BIOS settings (date/time),load optimal
defaults,
then reset for add ons, etc, set to boot to cd,hd 2nd,set & save.

And as the OP says that LINUX will install perfectly OK, how on EARTH will
your ridiculous "advice" help?

Ghz.

For the time being, go into the bios and disable any (and all) on-board
devices...
also remove all cards except for the video card...
then give it another try
