Hi, have been trying to help a friend of mine resolve an Internet connection
issue. He is running XP with SP2 and connects to the net via AOL using an
Ethernet cable and a Belkin router. All was fine until last Wednesday when he
couldn't access the net. I have had a look at the PC and notice that the
system is trying to access an IP address. Have been through 2 very unhelpful
phone calls with AOL Technical backup the end result being that they can see
the router but what ever we try we cannot change the IP Address.Their
diagnoses of the problem is that there are corrupt files preventing the
connection being made however they couldn't tell me what these corrupt files
might be or how to fix the issue.
Does anybody know what I might try next ?
If any more information needed please let me know and TIA
Delete the connection and build a new one.

Umm, have you Reset the router?
Started in Safe Mode and checked?
run updated AV/malware scans?
Checked the router logs?
Checked Event Viewer?
used MSConfig to turn things off & try restarting with minimum configs?
run chkdsk?
Etc?

I fail to see what you think running chkdsk will achieve or why I should
want to run msconfig either. The point is the PC is not getting the correct
IP address.
Etc

Hello El.Plates,
You could try the following
1) From command prompt type
c:\> netsh
2) You will then get the netsh prompt. at that prompt type
netsh> interface ip
3) You will then get the 'netsh interface ip' prompt. At
that prompt, type
set address name="Wireless Network Connection" source=dhcp
