Cannot connect to Microsoft to get any windows or security essentials updates

I've been having this problem for over a week now, so I know it's not an intermittent connection issue. I get error messages saying that Windows Update and Microsoft Security Essentials automatic updates failed. I go in and
attempt to do the updates manually and they again fail. I've attempted all of Microsoft's automatic fixes for this issue and none of them have worked. The failure is in the connection process, however, I have a solid internet connection and can do pretty
much anything else online. I was having the same problem with Norton live update before this, where I couldn't retrieve updates, which is why I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials. I'm thinking it might be some sort of virus that is blocking any updates,
but I've run complete scans and my system shows up clean. The virus definitions are only about a week old. Any ideas on what's wrong or how to fix it? Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.130104-1431)
