Hi, I am trying to fix a family members computer but I am having a
problem getting it to connect to the internet, IV done all the obvious
things e.g... rebooted the router, made shore firewall is not
blocking it, reinstalled ie7 and I have tried Firefox, but when I
click on Firefox it will not launch, removed a few viruses, Configured
IP address, but it will just not connect to the internet, I can share
files over our home network and all my other computers can connect to
the internet.

The computer I'm trying to connect to the internet is running Windows
XP home sp2

Can anyone help? Cheers.

the virus's may have
corrupted your system files
and antivirals do not have
the capacity to replace
the genuine files. at best
they can perform a system
restore.

try booting into safemode
with networking. the networking
option permits the modem to
initialize:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222

if you cannot access the net
via this mode, then it is likely
you will need to repair the
operating system.

there are two methods that
can help with the above.

but for time saving i simply
would suggest the method
referred as repair installation:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

if however, you can access
the internet via the safemode
option, then you still need to
do more sterilization in normal
mode

there may still be some malware
still active "or" possibly a third party
program is running or trying to run
but is corrupted and in turn corrupting the
performance of your computer.

it would help you to do what is referred
to as a clean boot. this method would
eliminate some of the possibilities:

Asked and answered in the other newsgroup to which you posted. Please
don't multipost; it makes more work for everyone and will get you *less*

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
