I'm trying to download Windows Updates, but I keep getting an error message
stating: "website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page" .
What is the easiest fix for this?

Thanks,

You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display
the requested page" error message when you try to install an update:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883614

Assuming WinXP, see:

Error message when you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web
site on a Windows XP-based computer: "Windows Update has encountered an
error and cannot display the requested page":

PA Bear- thanks for your suggestion. I followed method 1, verify services
started, but I still get the same error message. However, I didn't see
"Automatic Updates" in the list of services..... just "Updates." Is that the
same thing? I tried pasteing in the Run commands but in each case that
generated an error: "Installation Failed."

Can you suggest more things to try?

1. Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

2. Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

I guess this is making headway. Now I'm getting this message. But I'm the
adminstrator and sole user of this computer.

How would I confirm that in Vista? I did set up a password last week when I
got the computer. Then I disabled it because it was such a hassel to enter
it every time, and no one else has access to the computer.

Robert, Vista cannot access the Windows Update Website.

If you want to check for updates manually, follow these steps:
1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then
clicking Windows Update.

2. In the left pane, click Check for updates.

As for your query regarding Administrators - You'll have to learn about *UAC*

| How would I confirm that in Vista? I did set up a password last week when I
| got the computer. Then I disabled it because it was such a hassel to enter
| it every time, and no one else has access to the computer.

Does anyone know what "BJ Status Monitor" is? I'm guessing it is something
malicious. Just now I started printing an online bank statement and I got a
warning this program was trying to enter my computer. The warning screen
showed just part of the location: "...m32\spool\drivers\w3286\3\cnmsm69.exe
name:(BJ Status Monitor)" but I ran a search and couldn't find it. In Vista,
how doe you search when only a portion of a file name is know. Isn't this
something I should remove?
