Hello!

On our "2003 R2 x86 SP2"-DHCP-servers we have a problem with tcpsvcs.exe
eating private bytes and found useful information in article 939928,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939928.

On our request for this hotfix we were adviced to use it even if we stated
that we have R2. R2 is not mentioned in the articles "Applies To"-section and
later we also found that the current version of dnsapi.dll is newer than the
one supplied in the hotfix. Could this cause a problem?

Current version: 5.2.3790.4238
Hotfix version: 5.2.3790.4116

Sincerely
Peter Nilsson

Hello PN,

R2 is a feature pack with additional tools on 2003, so the basic is correct
for the patch. If it will be not compatible you will be notified during extraction
and installing. To be sure if something goes wrong, just create a backup/image
before starting the installation.

Best regards

"just create a backup/image
before starting the installation"

you should do this prior to applying ANY patch to a production system

Thanks for you hints, I will surely create a backup before applying the patch
:)
But I could still cause disturbance for many users while testing. I´m sorry
that I refered to R2, I see that servers without R2 also contains a newer
version of dnsapi.dll than the hotfix. Instead the question should be
rephrased:

Is it common that hotfixes contain older versions of system files and should
one not have second thoughts before applying them? And, if applied, will they
not be replaced later by windowsupdate and put you back to square zero?

No, .... well the answer is "it depends" if you look at a hotfix for SP1,
but you have SP2 installed on your host, then the Hotfix can contain an
older version of the file.

at first yes, but then you need to find out where the the newer version is
coming from. E.g. is a (newer) patch/SP already installed.

Example: if you have installed Security Vulnerability patch MS08-020
(KB945553) then you are already running a later version of the dnsapi.dll
then included in hotfix KB 939928

All comes down to patch management in the end.
