Can i redeem gift card code of surface rt, if i m using windows 8?

Hi,, i m using surface rt with windows 8. I got a gift card when i purchased surface... but i dont know how to redeem the gift card... can i redeem ot using win 8 .. i dont want to install win 8.1 cz i dont have free memory.. plz help me
