Somewhere in the last few days - I don't know when - the tab on the
"properties" page marked "Desktop" disappeared. "Themes",
"Screen Saver" , "Appearance", "Slide Show" (which I never use) and
"Settings" are there, but "Desktop" has vanished. Any help getting it
back appreciated!

Thanks,

Tony

Have you checked for a system restore point dated prior to the onset of this
problem?

Yes I did, Ron - but I only had four days worth (I keep a small cache
of System Restore files) and back to the earliest it was still there - I
was last in Desktop/Properties about a week ago.

MVP Kelly(I know you know who I mean) pointed me to a fix that worked
perfectly, and I'm grateful to any of you who replied to this post. Now,
if I only knew what I inadvertently did - if it indeed was something I
did - that caused that. But I kept the reg code in case it should
happen again.

Thanks,

Tony

Hi Tony Meloche,

Ensure your system is clean of malware and other parasites.

To re-enable the Desktop tab:

Open the Registry Editor (start > run > regedit.exe).
Navigate to:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
and/or
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

Remove or change the value to 0 for "NoDispBackgroundPage".

-----

Or you can download the following file from my company's web site to
your desktop.

http://www.lprf.ca/files/cntrlpnl/dsplyprprts/DsktpTb.Show.reg

Right-click "DsktpTb.Show.reg" to select Merge. This will make the
required changes to re-enable the Desktop tab.

NOTE: You can view the contents of "DsktpTb.Show.reg" by right-click
the file to select "Edit.

-----

If you are using Windows XP Professional then make the changes in the
Group Policy Editor (Start > Run > gpedit.msc)

Navigate to:

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Display

Double-click "Hide Desktop tab" and choose "Not Configured"

------

Here is my Blog article on the missing Desktop tab in Display
Properties.

Thanks Bill - all is well again. No malware found by Norton, SpyBot or
Ad-Aware, though.
