I am unable to browse using any Internet browser. However, I can browse if I
open up Windows Explorer and go to any site in my bookmarks. Email through
Outlook works fine. I installed Firefox and Opera and cannot browse with
either of them. I have run every legitimate spyware program I could find. I
know there has to be a registry setting somewhere that is causing this, but
I just cant figure out which one. Any ideas?

Well, what happens when you /try/ to browse using IE? What version of IE
are you running?

I had a similar problem when running win 98 SE, that running scanreg/restore
took care of.

Would it be advisable for him to try system restore?
Thanks, Tony

Try running every virus scanner you can find.

I have run IE6 and IE7 and FireFox 2.0.0.10. I dont think its browser
related, because I can ping sites and use Outlook. I have tried a variety of
anti virus and spyware utilities.

Make sure your firewall is not blocking ports 80 or 443.
What firewall are you using?
What other security programs?

Fair enough.

But your post reminded me of Negativland's style, particularly Helter
Stupid. It's all in the timing!

I've tried Firefox, and it's OK. But I greatly prefer Maxthon, which
is also freeware. If you've never seen it, I recommend that you give
it a try.

My understanding is that Maxthon isn't a browser per se but rather a
shell for IE. If that's so, I can hear the anti-IE crowd advising people
to stay away from it. I believe the issue is usually ActiveX.

Now, I am conservative in my Web browsing habits. and my settings
reflect this (that's why I'm not anti-IE for *my* browsing). Still, is
there something we should be aware of when it comes to ActiveX
vulnerabilities?

That said, why do you prefer Maxthon to Firefox, Ken?

Yes, it is.

IE permits turning off Active X if you want to. It's entirely
optional.

I prefer the feature set, as well as the look and feel of Maxthon.
These things are individual feelings and it's certainly true that we
all don't have to prefer the same things. That's why I didn't say "Use
Maxthon; it's better than Firefox," but rather "If you've never seen
it, I recommend that you give it a try." You should make your own
judgments about what software you prefer, not use what I prefer or
anyone else prefers.

So again, I suggest only that you try it. But give it a fair
trial--not just an hour or two. Use it for a couple of weeks, and
explore its features. Then let me and others here know what you think.

I should also add that it's been some time since I compared the two,
so I can't even the remember all the specifics of my preference. I
can't remember everything that Firefox does, or what Maxthon does
better than Firefox. But I certainly remember my conclusion--that to
me Maxthon was much the better choice.
