I tried to update the drivers for my CD players (one a burner). When I
tried to install the new HP driver for the first one, it deleted both
drives! I came here and found a download called CDgone, but it didn't
help. Any ideas on how to get my CD drives back? The Device Manager
doesn't show them either, but shows no problems with the controllers.
I haven't a clue!

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried going to a restore point prior to the date you did the driver
install?

Why? Try a previous restore point, it will reset your registry to a
registry that actually worked.

you might try a system restore from start?>programs>accessories>system
tools>system restore
pick a date before the trouble started.
I have seen botched firmware updates kill hardware, so good luck.

Well, I tried several restore points and none worked. Both drives are
still not in the Device Mgr or in My Computer. The burner's green
light is on all the time and it won't even open. The other one will
open, but nothing else. Is it possible that installing HP's updated
driver it fried my CD players? Both of them? Bummer! Any other ideas?

Try both in another machine.
I have seen firmware updates kill hardware.

Not that unusual. People update their bios just because a new version is
offered online for free and kill their mobo. NEVER upgrade firmware
unless you really need to, dont do it just for fun or because the latest
update is out for free download.

I seldom fix things that aren't broke! Both drives had been having
trouble recognizing disks for some time, usually taking 3 to 6 tries
before they'd read one. Burner worked fine, once it recognized the
disk.
