To restore the Vista MBR after installing an pre-Vista Windows one needs to
run Bootsect.exe which is said to reside on Vista installation DVD.
My HP Pavilion computer arrived with Vista preinstalled with no DVD but with
a partition on HD with some recovery files on it. No Bootsect.exe among
them.
At the same time there is a file called Bootsect.bak ( 8 K in size) in the
root of C drive. Is it a back up of Bootsect.exe, and can I use it for the
above purpose?

No, bootsect.bak isn't Bootsect.exe. A copy of bootsect.exe was included in
version 3.1 of VistaBootPRO in their Program Files folder. It can be found
here:

Google it. See what you find.

without researching at all, I would speculate from the name it is a boot
sector backup file.
if there is a bootsect.exe or bootsect.sys or bootsect,.dll, etc. that file
is a previous version.
if you uninstall whatever program created it, the bootsect.*** will be
restored to the previous settings.

Its a file that Vista creates, I always have it. Every install of vista
has it. So its not from any 3rd party software or even from vista´s
software. I think its somekind of backup of the bootsector?? If i open
the file with notepad, this is the only thing readable:
A disk read error occurred
BOOTMGR is missing
BOOTMGR is compressed
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

It is the backup of the boot sector made by Windows. Leave it alone.
