blue screen

I have a dell laptop,inspiron 6000 that has a few years on it.it runsXP,pak3.i got a blue screen because i was running a check because i had no sound,and i cant get it off.any ideas?can i download another program onto a disk from another computer, and install the new program onto the one with the blue screen?
