When I start up XP, everything appears to be moving along smoothly. But
within a few seconds of opening the screen with the list of users, the screen
suddenly goes black. Please post any suggestions about how to stop this
problem. Thanks!

Does it happen in Safe Mode too?

I can't get the machine to go into Safe mode. I have rebotted and pressed
away on the F8 button, but no menu options appear, the screen goes to the
Users screen, and then blackout.

If you can get to the logon screen then you can get to the
Safe Mode menu. Have a closer look at your keyboard -
I suspect it requires you to press a certain key up the top
in order to activate the function keys F1-F12. If you cannot
work it out, check the manual that came with your keyboard.

Are you using a wireless or USB keyboard ?

Try with a "standard" PS/2 keyboard..

I am using a Dell Inspiron 600 laptop, so I am working with the keyboard
that's built into that laptop. Is there a trick to getting this keyboard to
pay attention or register the function keys?

Thanks.
