Billions of packets sent on network connexion in few minutes !

Hello all,

On an XP Pro computer, I opened the network connexion properties - to
find that even if I was connected only for a few minutes, the number of
"sent" packets were in the hundred of billion range while the recieved
packets were under a thousand.

The computer is connected to a router to share internet connection. No
know networt or net intensive program is running.

Usual scans for viruses, trojan or other malware gave no result.

Any idea on what's happening or where to start looking for the cause of
this issue ?

Forgot to say : neither the network connexion (dark & light blue
monitors) nor the zone alarm (red and green meters) tray icons indicate
that network traffic is occuring.
