Hello - I'm just reinstalling Mint Mate on my laptop but with 'proper' partitioning...

The idea is that I will be able to (apparently) install other distro's and use their interfaces instead of Mint's if I so choose.
Also, when I come around to upgrading / dating mint I will be able to do so easily...

So I found this tutorial and have followed it through pretty much. However where I'm getting confused (and that doesn't seem to be resolved in the thread simply enough for me to get) is with the data partition.

I current have 3 partitions

/
/home
swap

They are my three.

But apparently there can be file conflicts / confusions with this set up when future updates are done, and that to prevent this another partition is needed, /data (or something to that effect)

So obviously I'm a bit confused, and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks!
