B9s (Bitsy Beige Boxes Between Black Borders Bearing Brief Blurbs) -- or
better, by byword "Tooltips" -- persist on my screen sometimes when I
open a new window.

Or when a (benigner?) B9 better begin!

Oh..., what am I gonna do? What am I gonna do? I'm already wringing my
hands. Burn the BIOS?

(I have Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600,
hacked quarterly) on a Gateway MX3701 laptop with an ATI RADEON XPRESS
200M series display adapter. What's it to you?)

hth (or at least that it doesn't hurt)

From googling "disable tooltips" I found, first entry:
http://www.activewin.com/tips/reg/interface_1.shtml

Although ToolTips may be helpful, you might find it annoying. To disable it,
go to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. On the right pane,
double-click UserPreferencemask and change the value to 3E 00 00 00. To
enable it again, change the value back to BE 00 00 00.
