backing up c:\windows\ntfrs

Brent Gardner

I have a Windows Server 2003 server that used to be a DC but was demoted
and is now a member server. The machine now runs SQL Server 2000 and
participates in SQL replication as both publisher and distributor.

My tape backup software indicates it is skipping the contents of
c:\windows\ntfrs. I know this is part of the file replication service.

Is this folder backed up as part of system state? Does it need to be
backed up separately? Should it be excluded?

hello,

did you demote it properly ? or did you issue a /forceremoval ?

Is the folder empty ?

It's not linked to your SQL replication (as far as i know)

As far as I know the server was demoted without incident. Do only DCs
use the File Replication Service? If so I'll simply disable the service
and we're done.

OK.

I have checked my other member servers. They all have the File
Replication service disabled. I have checked the service on this
machine and no other services depend on it and the machine does not
participate in file replication, so I have stopped and disabled the
service. End of story for this machine.

However...

For all two of my domain controllers, the tape backup software also
reports that it cannot back up data under c:\windows\ntfrs because it
cannot open the files.

After much google searching I cannot find yea or nay that the data in
these files are included in system state, or that they should be backed
up separately, or that they should be excluded.

I've seen plenty of discussions about backing up/restoring replicated
data, SYSVOL, etc., but that's not what this is, is it?

This is metadata for the File Replication service.

Can anyone give or point me to a definitive answer?

Finally I've found some definitive information.

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/233427,

c:\windows\ntfrs\jet\* is excluded from ntbackup backups by default.

I'm adjusting my backup software to exclude these files.
