Audio playback does not work on XP - device seems fine though

The audio on my laptop computer has always worked without problem. Recently,
however, the speakers stopped working all of a sudden, and I have not been
able to get it back to normal again. Most audio problems I've encountered so
far converge to either broken hardware or broken driver installations. I'm
thinking my problem is driver- (or other software-)related, but I have not
been able to figure it out and a re-install of HP drivers does not help.

I have the following information available:
- The notebook is a HP Pavillion dv4354
- The audio device is a SoundMAX integrated card

And the following more detailed description of my problem:
- The speakers do not work anymore, but playback through the headphones
still works(!)
- There are no (noted) hardware conflicts, and a driver re-install did not
help
- 2 days ago the problem got even stranger, when audio playback all of a
sudden worked for several dvd's I inserted to see what was on them. After
this, the playback of other audio files also worked for the rest of the day.
As of yesterday, however, the problem is back. (So the speakers appear to be
fine.) Inserting another random dvd does not help.

I have the feeling the solution will be quite straight-forward, but I
haven't been able to find it so far... If anyone has any thoughts on this
problem, this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.
