i suddenly lost audio on my pc. no changes to software and all connections
are fine. how do i diagnose this?

Does it show up as "ok" in Device Manager? Try removing it and rebooting.
Does Windows 'see' it and try to set it up again?

Is the PC speaker beeping at you?

Check the obvious, make sure the cat didn't chew through any cables.

Onboard sound or PCI?

Cables OK.
No beeping.
do you mean "sounds and audio devices" in "control panel"?
in that case i don't know where to locate the hardware.
