Any function loss moving from USB drive to network drive?

I have a couple of IDE drives attached to my PC via USB2 enclosures (no
IDE controller, and no space inside)

I'm thinking of moving these to a network enclosure for performance
reasons, and also to get the extra noise away from me. In the process
they would change from a "local", albeit slow drive, to a full-blown
network drive.

Would I lose any features in this process? I'm not talking about exotic
stuff, such a SMART failure technology, but simple stuff such as
encrypted directories, compression, NTFS permissions and so on.

I'm reasonably sure I'd be on shaky ground with userid-level access
restrictions. I have to keep my address book/diary away from my wife! :-)

I don't help coverts and perverts.
