Hi,
I have a problem that's drying me abosuletly insane: I cannot view ANY
animated graphics at all!
I cannot see animated GIF's in any browser: IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. I
cannot see them using any application including Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer, IrfanView, PhotoShop CS3, GIMP, etc. All I see is a grey box with the
words "Animated Graphic" on it – actually shows like this in all those apps.
I also can't see Flash animations; though instead of seeing "Animated
Graphic" I see absolutely nothing. When I "view source" for any webpage,
whether the page is stored locally or online, the HTML lines referencing any
GIF or FLASH object are missing, not even the image tags are there! Thus,
something must be intercepting and stripping the code before it even gets to
the browser.
This leads me to believe that they’re being blocked by some security setting
somewhere or some critical file has been replaced – something very deep
inside Windows. However, I can't seem to find how to restore things to normal
even after uninstalling my anti-virus (which doesn't even have the option to
block animated GIF's).
I don't use Windows Firewall, Zone-Alarm or any software-based firewall, but
that doesn't matter because like I said before, no animated graphics work
ANYWHERE. I’ve not had a virus or spyware problem for over 7 years but
decided to run scans using various other AV and Anti-Spyware products just to
be extra sure. I even booted off my Linux-based G-Data Anti-Virus Kit 2007 CD
and found nothing. I now have almost every non-essential Windows service
turned off in an attempt to simplify troubleshooting and still nothing.
Anyway, all I want is to restore Windows functionality back to it's default,
but I don't want to reinstall XP as I have a rather complex setup - RAID0 and
RAID5 arrays with over 1TB right off the motherboard and simply have no way
to backup everything. All I want is to enable the default behavior for XP
regarding GIF's at least.
I have no fear of messing with the Registry or anything else for that
matter. I'll be amazed if anyone here has a clue but I’m open to ANY
suggestions.
I'm running XP SP2 (completely up to date), AMD X2 4800+, 2 GB RAM, EVGA
GeForce 7800GTX.
Thanks,
CXS
