If you go to Ubuntu you can download a live CD iso file that'll boot on
your computer and allow you to try it out (with your hardware, etc.)
without actually installing it.

This book is very helpful for somebody starting out in Ubuntu Linux:

I have a Windows 98 machine that still works. I have to have it to run
proprietary control and management applications on "vintage" equipment.
