Windows 2000 Alternate data file location

Apart from the issue of who will be able to access the data, is there any
reason why a large body of data (music collection within a main folder and
subfolders) can't be created in the root directory at the same level as
Documents and Settings? I'd be doing this for convenience, but I also recall
that there was a capacity issue in Win98 with regard to the amount of data
that could be placed under My Documents.

I've always put stuff like that in a c:\ subdirectory. NOTHING goes
into 'My Documents' -- when you want to do stuff in a DOS window, the
simpler the path the better.

There used to be a limitation to the number of entries in the main (c:\
or d:\ or whatever) directory, but perhaps it's different now. I don't
use windows enough to worry about it.

Hi Roger,

You can create any folder you want outside My Documents in the Root folder
and put what you want in them. The capacity issue was fixed in Windows 2000
with Service Pack 4 (SP4) with the over limit file issue using the NTFS file
system. Don't think there was ever an issue with Folders & Sub Folder.

Thanks, glad to know they fixed it. I hope changing the folder name to
something a little less dumbed-down than "My Documents" is next (yes, I
changed it myself).
