Needy

I have a number of virus issues, 22,000+ .tmp files ( and growing daily),
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED to name a few.

At this point, I think I need to wipe my HD clean and start from scratch.
The catch is I'm running XP Home from an upgrade disk. Will this lack of the
full OS impact my ability to reinstall?

Also, some of programs, namely Photoshop, are so old I've lost the original
disk. Can I copy the entire programs and reinstall them after the wipe.

I think your plan is a good one. Start over.

1. Yes, you can do a clean install XP from an upgrade disk. You will need to
have an install CD of an older qualifying operating system (Win9x/ME) on
hand. In the early part of the installation process, XP will say that it
doesn't see an earlier qualifying operating system on the hard drive.
You'll put in your Win9x/ME disk to prove you are entitled to use an
upgrade version of XP. Then follow the prompts as to when to take that out
and put your XP disk back in the drive.

2. You cannot copy the programs and reinstall them. You will need to install
the programs from the installation media - CD/DVDs or installable
executables downloaded from the Internet. I'm sorry, but there is no way
around this. If you can't afford to buy a current copy of Photoshop (who
can?) look for an older copy on eBay (but be cautious when purchasing items
from an online auction site) or find another program that will do what you
want and that you can afford. For example, The Gimp, while not as powerful
as Photoshop, is similar and it is free.

Also have ready the install CD for whatever version you upgrade
*from*. As I recall, you do not need to have the prior Windows
version installed, just have its install CD available so you can
qualify to the upgrade CD that you have a prior version of Windows
from which you can upgrade.
 
Software does exist that claims to be able to "move" an installed program
from one PC to another but, I suspect that it would not be very successful.
Even if such software did, for example, successfully "gather up" your
installed "Photoshop" and "transplant" it into a different Windows
installation, you could well be transplanting malware along with it.

Fortunately as a last ditch effort I had a stroke of luck and worked with the
Microsoft Virus team ( Whew! 4 hours on the phone) to bring my system back to
working condition. I still have those naggy tmp files (nearing 30,000), but
the pop ups have stopped and no more error messages.

For some reason, with the time lost with this, I don't feel as relieved as I
probably should.

Nonetheless, thanks to all who offered their wisdom in my time of need...
