After going through a big hassle with the latest IE7 updates (KB942615), I
have to ventilate my feeling!

My God, what is Windows a hassle!!! Since Win95 you have countless hassles,
patches, servicepacks & updates why not an OS that works smoothly like Apple
OS's!?? 95% of the world works with Windows, it's time they do their job
properly instead of forcing us to upgrade & pay lots of money each time!!
Vista seems to be even worse!! I don't bother buying it before all flaws are
ironed out!

Max.

Can't make a direct comparison between a PC and an Apple. Apple is
a "Closed System" - tightly controlled, minimal 3rd party hardware and
applications. Contrary to popular belief an Apple/OS-X is NOT immune
from Viruses/Malware. It's just the authors don't bother with such a
miniscule market share Computer/OS. However recently Apple computers
had a Malware threat released against them.

Do patches have unanticipated results - you bet they do. There is no way
to test against every single combination of Hardware/Software that Windows
supports.

Please let us know when you intend to step down from your soap box.

By the way, if you like Apple so much, what are you doing here?

....And there's a Catch22 in that statement. If Apple had 95% of the
market, all the malware/virus writers would be targeting Apples, and
it would be the Windows OS that "works smoothly." :)

Since no one is "forcing us to upgrade & pay lots of money", perhaps
you should try an Apple.

Your comparison is not to valid because of some of the main
differences, a few being:
A larger % of users makes it more attractive for malware writers.
Apples exerts far more control on their systems, Microsoft doe not
even make systems.

"I don't bother buying it before all flaws are ironed out!"
Then you will never buy Windows vista.
If you apply that standard to other software, you never buy any other
software from any manufacturer.
If you apply that to other products outside of computers, you may buy
nothing else ever again.

To all responders: yes, you're right Apple is a niche market and each
software has its inevitable flaws and people need working on it for
improvement. 99% of the time XP works just fine for me and I see continue
improvements since Win95! I was just angry!

"99% of the time XP works just fine for me"
It seems like you should stay with Windows XP depending of course on
the other 1%.
Since computers continue to be sold with Windows XP, Windows XP
continues to be for sale and Windows XP will probably be supported for
several more years, there is no reason for most to upgrade.

You're right Jupiter Jones, I'll stick to XP.
Quite often I help people with their PC and a real plague is those OEM
pre-installed PC's with all bells & whistles you never asked for!! I strongly
prefer a 'bare' PC and do the formatting & installation (of an genuine MS
version) all myself!

"pre-installed PC's with all bells & whistles you never asked for!!"
Then they come here and other places complaining their new computer is
slow.
They often need more memory, but simply disabling junk from starting
at boot or uninstalling the junk can be as effective and cheaper than
adding memory.

Also very frustrating to see is how many programs (bells & whistles) people
are not aware of or never use, are started up each time and run in the
background! People have no clue, are so helpless but in most cases are too
lazy to learn the PC basics!!
They never have heard of 'msconfig' etc. but complain of a slow PC, they try
to 'uninstall software' by removing the shortcuts from the desktop!! My
brother's PC, brandnew in unused 'virgin condition' with OEM XP Home (+ bells
& whistles) pre-installed had a whopping 9GB of his harddisk wasted from the
start!

I accept this comment .OEM PC which are built for home and home office
users are full of crap.Never works properly.Performance shouldnt be a
problem but no stability.Components inside the system will fail to work
properly every now and then. There customer support also is not very
effective for home users

A very useful application for any *new* pc is the PC Decrapifier, it
attempts to remove all of the crap on your PC that you never asked for...
