After a reinstall of XP my CD drive works but my DVD drive doesn't work

I have completed a reinstall of Windows XP on an Inspiron 1150. I now find that the CD/DVD drive is misbehaving. Specifically whereas the drive accepts CDs OK it refuses to recognise DVDs. What's going on? I suspect some problem with the device driver
or the decoder.
