Happy New Year everyone!!

My question: I cannot use Adobe 6.01 on that old small computer. It keeps
coming up with an Illegal Operation pop up. I do have Adobe 3.02 on it
because I got that off my Office 97 disk.

I tried to get the Adobe Reader from the Adobe site but all they have for
Windows 98SE is the Adobe 6.01. Nothing in between the 3.02 and 6.01.

I went up to the www.oldversions.com and tried to download 5.05 from there
but it kept freezing up. When I did the 3 finger solute, it told me that
www.oldversions.com was not responding.

I was going too try to get the download from www.oldversion.com to my
desktop that has the DSL and burn it to a disk but I think it downloads
automatically to the machine itself. That plan would not work

I am using, at this time, dial up on that old computer. I kept trying to get
the Adobe 5.05 and it kept freezing up. I do a restart every time after I
try because this other computer has only 64 mg of RAM.

I do not feel at this time that I do not want to go through the expense of
an Ethernet Card and a wireless connection for it. That machine is old, how
old, I do not know. It is what I call a "thrown together machine". Hardware
age, unknown.

Question: How can I get the 5.05 version for that machine?

Another question: Do I need it or will the 3.02 be good enough?

Angel

Using your DSL machine, download this, burn it to CD to transfer to the
other machine.
http://grystmill.com/shared/rp505enu.exe

A wireless adapter costs only a few dollars, Angel. Here's an example that's
$24, but I've seen them for under $20. http://tinyurl.com/2moqjx

To be honest, that machine is just too old and on the bottom end of what can
run Win98SE. I will expect endless problems from you to be posted here that
mostly have to do with that machine being too weak for the purpose.

Go here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html

For Operating System, select "Windows"
For Version, select "95"

Yes, 95, not 98.....that will give you a download button for Acrobat Reader 5.0.5

Or you also can download it direct from Adobe:
http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobatreader/win/5.x/rp505enu.exe

Don't forget about any updates for it, like the Accessibility and Forms
patch A505AFP1.exe, etc.. but at this point does it really matter:
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/5.x/

Thank you very much Gary,

I was able to do the burn and install. It appears that it will work for that
machine. Like you say it is really not built to do much. No one knows how
old that machine is. If I ever try to do anything as far as downloads it
can't cut it! I think the only time I will use it to get on line is to
update the Avast!, and in case something happens to this one that I would
need to yell to the group or email for help!

Maybe what he did was upgrade it to 98SE from 95 or older machine. The old
keyboard was from 3.11. I think that is what my youngest son said. What the
other parts were from, only the guy that put it together knows, maybe!

The one that is hooked up to the DSL I bought June 2000.

Now that I think about it, that machine may be too old to handle the
wireless adapter. Don't know enough to tell you...

Maybe you should install Win95 instead? I got a couple of old copies, and
most of the updates, too, unless I've lost that folder.

That link to the wireless adapter was wrong, here's the right one:
http://tinyurl.com/3dn42g

Looks like it should be OK on your machine if you have a spare PCI slot.

Hi Glee,

I was able to do the download and burn that Gary instructed in his post and
it worked. I did 2 posts one at around 3PM and one sent at around 5PM
neither showed up here. I am trying again. Neither was in my outbox. They
were in my sent box.

Angel

Thanks Gary

Hi Rick,

I did what Gary suggested and it worked! It seems that downloading anything
with that small slow machine goes not work. Thanks,

Gary,
Thanks, but the only problem I would run into if I reinstall the Windows 95,
is that I do not have the drivers for the sound card nor the drivers for the
modem. So I guess I will have to put up with the machine the way it is.
Remember? I had to have the guy reinstall those drivers after I reinstalled
the Windows 98SE.

Hi Gary,

I went out this morning and stopped at the lady's house and asked her to ask
the guy for the drivers for the modem and the sound card. She said that they
are to return to work tomorrow and would ask him then. I hope it does not
slip her mind. I will go to her in a couple of days and remind her. I wish I
had his phone number so I could ask him myself. If she forgets, I will have
her have him call me or get his phone number so I can call him. I never met
the man. Everything has been arranged though her.
