Hi,

Today I found 5 new Windows updates. One, KB3087985, was described as important and was a security update for Windows Explorer. I have installed it with no problems.

For the time being at least, I have hidden the other 4 optional updates which are KB30752949, KB3077715, KB3078667 and KB3080149. I don't understand Microsoft's gobbledygook in their explanations of the purpose of these updates but I gather the last, KB3080149, relates to time zones in some way. As they are described as optional, it seems they aren't crucial so I have hidden them to avoid being nagged while I try to discover if they would be beneficial for my Windows 7 SP1 system or not.

Any comments and advice from other forum members would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, regards to all, Kick.

Hi kick, since there was a mention of it on another forum, I have found there is no longer the notification on my bottom task bar that updates are available, I am having to go look for them manually. Are you seeing the same thing recently?

Like you one important update and some optional, one of the optional updates was security essentials updates which are regular, the others I have ticked to install and will look into what they are later and let you know how it all goes.

Hi Nev,

Normally I find the updates through checking in the Action Center early evening on Patch Tuesdays and occasional times during the month. This way I see them before the updates notification symbol shows on the 'Shutdown' button. This time, as I was not expecting any updates, I hadn't checked in the Action Center for a while and I found the update notification symbol on the shutdown button as I was about to close the system down. I don't think I have ever had any update notification showing on the taskbar itself.

I'd be interested to see what you make of the optional updates later.

Regards, Kick.

P.S. The Ashes - wow, taking a pessimistic view seems to have paid off - what a turn up for the book.

The notification used to just be a small window would pop up from the task bar, saying updates are available. very similar to the one that pops up afterwards to tell you updates have been installed.
My system is set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" in the "Change settings" of the updates window.

As for the optional updates they installed and no problems from them, the time and date thing is because of some changes elsewhere in the world so it is just to make sure your computer is synchronised with Windows time system. The other optional things may be required or not depending on how your system is set up.

Nev.

Thanks Nev, my computer is set to download and install updates automatically but in practice, certainly with Patch Tuesday, I have checked for updates before they have been downloaded to the UK but released in the USA. I've not thought to change my settings as yet but perhaps I will set updates the same way as you. Like you, I get the pop-up confirming that updates have been installed but not to tell me when updates are ready - that may be because I have bypassed the set update method for my system.

From what you say, it seems safe to accept the optional updates - someone suggested the time zone related one may be reflecting changes brought in my North Korea who do not want to be in the same time zone as Japan!

Cheers and regards, Kick.
