Activation Problem

Hi:

After doing a fresh install with a Windows XP Pro SP2 OEM CD, I activated
via the internet and all was good. I then installed some video drivers and
restarted. Upon restart, I was prompted to activate again before I could log
in. I couldn't activate over the internet this time, so I tried telephone
activation. The problem is that there is no installation ID--the number that
telephone support asks for. I've reinstalled, deleting and recreating
partitions beforehand, and I still have the same problem. Please, someone,
help! Thank you in advance!

Sometimes, when you install new hardware or change existing hardware, you
need to activate again. It happened to me once. It's no use re-installing
again etc.
But can't you use the number that you gave the first time while activating
via Internet? You must have had an installation ID?

So you had the Product to do it then.

What happened to the Product key you had before, the one you
successfully used to activate over the internet?

It is a m$ problem in their asking for an "installation-ID" instead of asking
for the "installation-ID" OR product-key. There people who don't equate the
product-key can be used "instead of" the "installation-ID"; the same fact hold
true for the m$ "support" email where the "installation-ID" is required & no
mention of being able to use the product-key that came with the CD.

I never saw my "installation-ID" for winxp or the ms ultimate office 2007;
where is it located or be found????? or did m$ just used different semantics
for the product-key in order to confuse people so as not to provide "support".

Could be. However if it is, it's likely the individual on the phone,
not Microsoft in general.

Thank you all for responding, but it seems that I wasn't clear in my first
post. I have my COA and Product Key, what is missing is the "installation
ID"--this is displayed in the Activation Window and is required for MS
telephone activation.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the phrase "before I could log in."
Do you have dial-up, by any chance? And if so, did you mean "before I
could log in to my ISP?"

If you don't see the Installation ID, I believe that means your
activation took place. That is, I believe the Installation ID shows up
*only* if activation didn't occur automatically.

No, the required entry in the email for ms support at ms specifically state
"installation-id" as the heading. I only found out that the product-key can be
used for the required "installation-ID' from the m$ tech support. ms need to
clarify as I don't know my "installation-id" nor was it ever provided nor do I
know where to find it.

Do you know what the "installation-key" for your windows products?
Or where to find it so the rest of us peasants would know?

Problem solved. I had to go through many layers of MS support, but eventually
they issued me a new product key to use. Once I entered the new product key,
a new installation ID was generated and I was able to activate windows.
