A friend appoached me with a problem, an older gent with a 7 year old
machine that has never seen the internet (I know no other info) his
description of his problem is when he moves a window he's seeing a
cascade of duplicated windows which is staying on desktop. and system
comes to a standstill. My first reaction to this is a video card
problem but I hope some one has found and dealt with similar problems.
Any guesses will help me narrow the possiblities before I travel there..

Since this an old computer, I would look at hardware issues first. It
could be the video card or the hard drive failing, or some other
component. There is no way for us to guess and the symptoms aren't
specific enough to give you a pinpointed answer.

That sounds like "Show window contents while dragging" is turned on and
the video card can't cope with it. (System Properties, Advanced,
Performance, Settings, Visual effects, Custom, uncheck the box)

There is a setting to show or not show the contents of a
window while dragging. Turn "show" off an the old graphics
will keep up.

Probably the cooling fans and heat sinks are dirty, and the
system is sluggish because of over-heating.
