Access denied on a particular file

[Muzzzy]

Hi,

I'm running a Win2003 R2 server with AD (at home for file sharing);
yesterday i decided to do a backup by just copying the D: drive onto a 1
TB external drive. On one file it gave "Access denied" error and so far
I can't find a way to get rid of it:

1. I'm running as a user with admin rights, but still i changed
ownership of the file to myself - didnt help;
2. I checked if file is locked by a process (which would be weird as
this file is not used - it's a part of an old archive) - none.
3. I ran couple of different antiviruses overnight - none
4. Ran chkdsk - didn't find any problems

I need to note that problem exists if i try to do anything with the
file, even just renaming it.

I'm totally lost - had similar problem in the office with a file on a
network share but it helped changing ownership.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Is the total pathname, including the file name, very long? I have had some
luck deleting these access denied files when nothing else worked by
shortening the pathname. I shortened it by temporarily renaming each of the
parent folders to like one letter, and then i was able to delete the file.
It occurs to me now though that perhaps if you were to create a share path
to the immediate parent folder the file is in, and then try and delete the
file, accesing via your new share path, that this might work. Let me know
if it does.

The full path including filename is 63 characters where filename itself
is "nc.exe", so path length is not an issue; also i have other files in
that folder and those are fine

You could try a shift-delete on it, or try and delete through dos command.
After you changed ownership did you confirm that your user account
repropigated down with full rights from the parent folder?

I right click on the file, go to security->advanced->ownership and i see
my account as owner; i also see that my account has full rights on the
file. I did try shift-del and from cmd - same error "access denied"...

When you checked to see if a process had locked the file, did you use a
comprehensive program like Microsft Process Explorer?

I used Unlocker (if you google Unlocker, thats' the first app you will
see). Anyway, it's just some exe file from some code i wrote 5 years
ago; it's in archive and not used for sure
