I needed some about a year ago and just put Free OCR into a google
search...then tried a few.
You should be able to find some pretty fast

I don't know anything about what you can download for free, but let me
point out that many scanners come with a free lite version of some OCR
product (in my case, it was OmniPage) and the lite version is
satisfactory for many people.
