A billion (software) RAID 5 questions

For Windows 2003 and up.

It is extremely difficult to find any detailed information about software
RAID 5 on the Microsoft site. So far i've found about 5 different pages that
tell me what a RAID 5 is but does not cover logical things, like how to
manage them, in detail.

For example, how can I add new disk into a RAID 5? What about best practices
for RAID 5 recovery when failures occur.

Any help would be much appreciated! Any books, links, anything!

Andrew, I (and many others) would strongly urge you to forget about software
RAID and use hardware. Once you've selected your hardware RAID controller
you can study the documentation that comes with it to answer your questions
on configuration, etc. Software RAID requires you convert the disks to from
Basic to Dynamic and while that may seem no big deal you'll find the major
imaging programs like Acronis really don't like dynamic disks if you ever
want to use one.
 
Thanks Dan, I solved my issue.
We were running RAID 10 on hardware, the card was replaced and failed 3
times so we gave up on hardware. It cost us $1000 each time the card failed
and the manufacturer refused to replace any of them under warranty.

Just for future reference :-) what was the name of the manufacturer?

I sure don't want to use them.
