Hey everyone (newbie here),
I have a U.S. Robotics 56K Fax Internal Modem card installed on my
hubby's computer. It's been installed for a while, but we've been
having some issues with it lately.
His computer hadn't had a spyware program ran on it in a while, so I
downloaded and ran Spybot Search and Destroy yesterday. After having
ran and cleaned up any malware that was on the computer, the modem
wouldn't connect to the internet. There was no dialtone and an error
message of 692 (hardware failure of modem or other connection device)
popped up.
After a little troubleshooting, I downloaded the new driver which
upgraded it to V.92 and installed the updated driver to the modem on
his computer. This got the modem to finally connect to the internet.
The issue we're having is that now the modem will sometimes stay
connected for upto 2 hours when left alone, but when he tries to play
an MMORPG (which ran fine before on the modem) now drops connection and
redials on him every 10-15 mins it seems like.
I took someone's advice and downloaded a dialup optimizer. I turned his
computer on today and installed it and the modem wouldn't connect again.
It gave me that same 692 error message. I'm not sure if it's because of
the software I installed, or if the modem is just acting up again.
I didn't think to try to connect to the internet before I installed the
software.
Do I need to think about replacing the modem? Or is there something
else I need to look at?
Thanks for your help in advance!
